To help tend to the financial health of our community hospital for years to come, the Friends Legacy Endowment Fund was created in 2008. And endowment works much like sensible personal finance. Instead of spending everything you earn, you should save or invest some of it. This careful approach strengthens financial status by creating additional income to help you deal with future planned and unplanned expenses.
Similarly, some of the dollars donated to the Hospital are collected in the endowment. When invested, the nest egg produces both growth and interest income and opens exciting new prospects for the Hospital in years to come. The endowment earnings will provide funding to buy advanced equipment so that we can provide patients with the most up-to-date medical technology right here in the Juniata Valley and recruit top-notch physicians.
Our goal is to build a one million dollar fund over the next five years. We will need support from every sector of the community we serve to accomplish our goal. To get the fund started, Friends of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital contributed the initial investment of $82,000. This seed money was raised and invested by the former Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital Auxiliary.
This gift is extremely important and puts us on the road to new financial strength. It signals a basic improvement in the way we'll fund our services in years to come. But it's only the beginning. To achieve the huge potential it represents, it needs to be strongly supported.
