There are two approaches to pain management. The first form of pain treatment uses medication to temporarily reduce pain. However, the approach used most often at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital employs minimally invasive procedures to alleviate pain. These procedures are used to treat the cause of discomfort, rather than temporarily masking the pain with medication. With the cause of the discomfort treated, the body often can heal itself naturally
In some cases, pain management may be used as a step toward additional therapy. At times the role of the pain management specialist is to reduce the patient's pain, so they are comfortable enough to participate in physical therapy or another type of rehabilitation.
Included in this section are in-depth descriptions of each procedure, what happens during the procedure, and what to do and expect after the procedure.
