The Nuclear Medicine section at Lewistown Hospital provides functional imaging of organs in the body by using small amounts of radioactive isotopes. Procedures are performed on one of four state-of-the-art Nuclear Medicine Gamma cameras. The cameras are capable of 2-D, 3-D and whole body imaging. Over 6,000 procedures are performed each year by our board certified Nuclear Medicine Technologists.
There are three areas within the Nuclear Medicine section:
- General Nuclear Medicine which is located on the First Floor within Imaging Services.
- PET/CT which is also located on the First Floor within Imaging Services.
- Nuclear Cardiology which is located on the Fourth Floor within the Cardiovascular Department.
Many nuclear medicine exams require that the patient report in the morning for the first part of the exam and return several hours later for the remainder of the exam. Also, many exams require a patient prep.
The Nuclear Medicine section is strictly monitored by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to insure safety for patients and employees. Our Nuclear Cardiology Laboratory is also accreditated by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL).
