Hand Therapy

The Lewistown Hospital Rehabilitation Services
Occupational Therapy Department is proud to have a certified hand therapist on
its staff. Upper extremity rehab care is provided as a team effort, which
includes:
- Specialized upper extremity evaluations addressing the
mechanisms of:
- Range of motion
- Strength
- Sensation
- Coordination
- Functional use of the hand in self-care, leisure and work tasks
- Implementation of a sequential treatment program addressing the specific
needs of the patient
- Splinting to enhance motion
- Patient education in:
- Various upper extremity injuries/syndromes
- Home exercise programs to improve hand function
- Joint protection techniques
- Nerve and tendon protection techniques
- Compensatory techniques for decreased sensation
- Prevention of hand problems through environmental adaptation
- Integration of a knowledge of anatomy and the intricacies of hand function
with daily activity performance
- Appreciation of the impact of upper extremity dysfunction upon daily
living skills and a commitment to improving hand function
