(March 4, 2010) LEWISTOWN — The meltdown is working. After only one week, Mifflin County Meltdown participants have lost more than a half-a-ton of weight. As of Wednesday morning, the 505 participants on 68 teams lost a total of 1057.37 pounds. That number does not include the weight of three teams, who did not report their weight to organizers.
Total percentage of weight lost equals 1.08 percent of participant’s body weight, or approximately 2 pounds per person. Starting weight for all the teams combined was 98,110.30 pounds.
The Mifflin County Meltdown features weekly meetings held each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Lewistown High School auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. The community-wide event runs through April 6. At least one member from each team must attend each meeting to report the team’s weight loss amount.
Each Tuesday night event will include a speaker on a health-related topic, various health screenings, inspirational success stories and prize giveaways. The March 9 speaker is Sue Burns with a presentation on “Nutrition — 10 in 10 for 2010.” She will talk about the top 10 dietary and lifestyle tools needed to melt down the pounds. The first 150 people through the doors on Tuesday will receive a salad coupon from McDonald’s.
Anyone can join the meltdown at any time during the six-week program. The Tuesday evening meetings are free and open to the public, even those not officially registered.
The Meltdown is a community event designed to raise awareness of the need to take responsibility for one’s health. It is intended to help people become fit, have fun and lose weight.
